Sharing the everyday misery and persecutions of the Ghetto’s inmates was a buffoon named Rubinstein. A poor beggar, he did not hesitate to make fun of the members of the Judenrat. He served as a kind of safety-valve for all the accumulated tension in the Ghetto. He was a familiar figure there as he paced the streets and expressed his typical sense of humor: «Jews», he would say, «You’re all going to die. There will be only three survivors: Czerniakow, Gancwajch and me.» He ranks
as one of the most unforgettable characters
in the Ghetto.
Rubinstein the Ghetto Fool was nonetheless deported during the mass roundups of the summer of 1942.
